Birthdays and benefits: A nudge on Social Security

Washington Post financial writer Michelle Singletary reminds us to check our Social Security benefit statement online on our birthday.  We used to receive an annual benefit estimate statement by mail about three months before each birthday. But in a cost-cutting move, the agency stopped the automatic mailing of statements. The SSA decided to mail statements to workers in the year they reach age 25 starting in October. People 60 and older who haven’t begun receiving Social Security benefits will receive a yearly mailed statement. Everyone else has to get his or her statement online at www.socialsecurity.gov.
